Raikkonen: Fifth maximum for Lotus

Kimi Raikkonen believes fifth place was the best possible result for him in the Korean Grand Prix. The Lotus driver, whose team has introduced a Coanda-style exhaust system , was unable to match the pace of the Red Bulls and Ferraris and finished 36 seconds behind race winner Sebastian Vettel. The result left Raikkonen 48 points behind Vettel in the championship, and the Finn admitted his chances are now very slim.

Report: GM pondering even closer Opel joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroën

Opel Adam live on show stand - copper with white wheels and top

Let's face it, even when they go well, partnerships rarely go as planned. Almost eight months after General Motors spent $423 million to snag seven percent of Peugeot, we on the outside are still wondering what the plan is. When the tie-up was announced, the main benefits were listed as purchasing power and platform sharing, and only a month after that, a deeper collaboration was discussed that would involve development of a dual-clutch transmission and a small car for Latin America.

We don't know what's come of it other than a potential write-down and Peugeot continuing to take a beating, but Reuters reports that the first phase of the venture is complete and now the two companies are working on more involvement for the second phase. A French newspaper report says one option for advancement would be the two companies becoming 50-50 partners, with GM kicking in more money for the privilege of doing so. Neither side would comment, but according to one Reuters source, the options on the table have also included "selling Opel to Peugeot, buying Peugeot's automotive business or putting them all together in a new entity."

If Peugeot bought Opel or vice versa, that would make sense - but only for the seller, who could wash his hands of the misery. The buyer would then have two poorly performing brands with deep structural problems, huge cash requirements and two national governments chaperoning its moves. We're not sure how the other possibilities mentioned could help Peugeot or Opel out of their quandaries, but we know something has to happen so it's likely we'll hear more soon enough.

Mercedes ‘set for late-season surge’

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes can target a stronger end to the 2012 Formula 1 campaign now it has made progress with its latest updates. Following a difficult middle part of the season, the introduction of a raft of developments , including a Coanda-effect exhaust, in Singapore has helped Mercedes move forward. Rosberg, who lines up ninth on the grid for the Korean Grand Prix, thinks that even more is possible in the final four races of the year.

Massa no longer driving for his future

Felipe Massa is sure that he is no longer driving for his Formula 1 future at Ferrari, after delivering a podium finish in Japan last weekend. The Brazilian finished in the top three of a grand prix for the first time in three years at Suzuka, with a result that will have boosted his chances of remaining at the Italian outfit next year. And although no final decision has been taken by Ferrari chiefs about who will line-up alongside Fernando Alonso next year, Massa reckons that he has done enough now to prove he is worthy of a fresh contract at the Maranello outfit.

Binder and Walczyk Sweep USA

After a fast week at New Smyrna, the iRacing.Com Sprint Car Series took a trip to Florida to visit the now-historic USA International Speedway. Missing from the schedule last season, USA International provides a test of horsepower and handling skill for all drivers who visit the track, regardless of the car they bring. Relative to the sprint cars, the track is a long one, coming in at 3/4 of a mile; a significant contrast to the half-mile of New Smyrna. Drivers would need to adapt quickly in order to snag the top spots of the week. Earlier this year, the “real” USA International closed its doors to the public, as its last race was held in 2008. On iRacing.com, the speedway lives on, and with the sprint cars it would [...]

Rumormill: Lamborghini planning four-seat Aventador concept for Geneva?

2012 Lamborghini Aventador - front three-quarter dynamic view

For Geneva, Lamborghini is rumored to be expanding the seating capacity of its Aventador supercar. UK magazine Car reports the Italian supercar builder is working on a four-seat Aventador GT concept to display next to its Roadster sibling.

The publican says the family-friendlier coupe will get an extended wheelbase, two small rear jump seats not unlike the Porsche 911 and possibly rear "suicide panel" doors. Their story goes on to say the possibility of the four-seat Aventador is unclear, but would be decided based on marketability, not feasibility. Previous reports have indicated that Lamborghini is still working on its Estoque four-door concept despite it not having a green light for production.

As for the long-rumored Aventador Roadster, Car says we should expect a retracting hardtop-style roof instead of the Erector-set-inspired cloth top on the Murciélago - that news would appear to conflict with earlier reports of a removable roof panel.

Report: Dealers claim factory-owned Tesla stores are illegal

Unlike typical dealers, Tesla has a network of "stores" and "retail stores." While reservations can be made for a new Model S or Roadster at the retail store, Tesla says other versions of the store merely direct potential customers to make their reservation online. Most of these boutique-style stores are in shopping malls, and Tesla asserts that they are not sales facilities. It's an assertion with which traditional auto dealers are taking issue.

Dealers associations and networks across the country are doubling down their efforts to make Tesla's OEM showroom network illegal. Tesla has opened 17 stores in 10 states, as well as the District of Columbia.

Dealership associations contend Tesla's notion that sales are not made at these stores, stating that the showroom experience is still part of the sales process. To that end, dealer groups across the country have embarked in legal battles with the electric carmaker. The Illinois Secretary of State has informed Tesla that it is illegal to list CEO Elon Musk as the owner of its Chicago store. The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association is looking into legal options against Telsa's Westchester store, as well as two others in New York. In Massachusetts, the opening of a store in the suburban Natick Mall is having its legality challenged by the dealer association in that state. California has laws in place that allow for a manufacturer to run its own dealership, as long as it is not within 10 miles of an existing dealer. That practice caught the ire of Chrysler dealers when the American automaker opened its own multi-brand showroom near downtown Los Angeles.

Tesla says the way that its stores are run are unique to each location. According to George Blankenship, Tesla's VP of sales, "If we can't be a dealer in a mall, we won't do reservations on-site. We tell people where to go on our website to make a reservation." Blankenship is the former Apple retail guru and the mind behind the Apple Stores - an experience Tesla hopes to recreate in its own sales network. In the eyes of many dealers, that is a threat to their own dealership model. As Tesla seeks to open more stores in more states, this is unlikely to be the end of the pushback against the electric automaker.

Report: GM says it will not sell Opel, Fiat still ready to buy

General MotorsAutomotive News reports General Motors has no interest in selling Opel. The statement comes after an Italian newspaper implied Fiat was ready to buy the brand should the alliance between GM and PSA/Peugeot Citroen fail. The publication reported that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is already crafting a proposal to acquire the German brand in the event GM calls it quits, using a strategy similar to the one that saw Fiat win Chrysler.

Fiat has declined to comment on the situation, but GM Vice Chairman Stephen Grisky said in a statement that GM stands behind Opel and that the brand is "a fully integrated part of GM's global footprint."

Grisky also said the GM-PSA alliance is still strong.

This isn't the first time rumors have swirled around Fiat's lust for Opel. The Italian brand attempted to buy Opel once before in 2009 when GM was briefly in bankruptcy. The American manufacturer eventually settled on keeping Opel, however. Meanwhile, Marchionne has said the European auto industry will have to consolidate if it is to survive the region's economic downturn.

Mark Webber branded Romain Grosjean as the "first-lap nutcase" and his behaviour as 'embarrassing' after a collision caused by the Frenchman on the first lap of the Japanese Grand Prix cost the Red Bull driver a chance of a podium. Grosjean hit third-placed Webber into Turn 2 and spun the Australian round, necessitating a pitstop for Webber, who rejoined at the back of the field.

Report: Volkswagen may build next Golf in Mexico

New Volkswagen Golf live at 2012 Paris Motor Show reveal - silver - front three-quarter view

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is likely to go into production next year for North American consumption, but Automotive News is reporting that the latest version of the Volkswagen hatchback could end up being built in Mexico by 2014 according to an interview with CEO Martin Winterkorn. The decision to produce the recently debuted 2014 Golf there could happen within a few weeks, and if it does come to fruition, all three of VW's biggest sellers in the U.S. would be produced in North America.

This would bode well for VW's targeted sales growth in the U.S., which is already up 37 percent this year over 2011. AN says that Golf production would take place at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant that currently builds the Jetta and Beetle, marking the first time the Golf is built outside of Germany. The report also indicates that the automaker is planning to produce the car in China as well.

The Winterkorn interview also discussed the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant that currently builds the Passat. Winterkorn admits that while capacity maxed-out at the year-old facility, there's room for expansion. On that front, confirming earlier rumors, Winterkorn noted that if VW is going to expand, it would be with a utility vehicle that is "roomier than the Tiguan."
