Pedrosa warns against spec ECUs

Dani Pedrosa has warned against the possible introduction of a control ECU to MotoGP in the coming years. Series promoter Dorna announced this week that it has signed a four-year deal with electronics specialist Magneti Marelli to make a standard ECU available to all teams from 2013. Although teams will still have a choice between running the Magneti Marelli unit or producing their own ECUs next year, Dorna is known to be pushing for mandatory use of a control system from 2014

Paris: Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car looks fast sitting still

Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car - live at 2012 Paris Motor Show reveal

Last week, we were able to bring you all of the details regarding Peugeot's new 208 Type R5 rally car, but there was only a shadowy teaser image with which to illustrate the pre-production rally titan.

Thankfully, with our meticulous shooters combing the floor, we now have a good long look at the Peugeot 208 R5, which the French automaker confirms will race next year in series like the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, European Rally Championship and the National Championships.

The 208 R5 is, of course, just as racy as we'd hoped, with a wheels-at-the-absolute-corners stance, huge white shoes wearing hometown Michelin rubber, a sizable rear wing and sporty graphics as far as the eye can see. Don't get used to seeing it in quite so gleaming a shade of white, however, as this one little guy is destined to get dirty, fast.

Keselowski: Sixth proves credentials

Erstwhile Chase leader Brad Keselowski says his salvaging of sixth at Loudon despite struggling for outright pace is proof of his championship credentials. In contrast to the opening Chase round at Chicagoland, when the 28-year-old Penske man triumphed to move into the points lead, he struggled for pace at New Hampshire and was struggling to break into the top 10 at the halfway mark. A late gamble to change two tyres helped him jump to sixth, a result he said embodied all the qualities of a championship team.

Quick Spin: 2013 Porsche Panamera GTS

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS - front three-quarter view, Carmine Red

We've already driven the Porsche Panamera GTS in Europe in a track environment, but haven't had the chance to talk about this car after driving it in on U.S. roads yet. I've driven a few different Panamera variants since the five-door hatchback was first introduced for 2010, but this all-wheel-drive Carmine Red GTS is my favorite variant thus far. It just strikes the right balance of power and poise with its amazingly well-sorted suspension (the GTS rides 10 millimeters lower than lesser models and comes standard with air suspension and Porsche Active Stability Management). The naturally aspirated V8 makes a great noise and with 430 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, and it has plenty of motivation yet actually doesn't feel absurdly overpowered.

Driving Notes
  • The automatic rear wing is a complex multi-piece affair that unfurls outward and then laterally. It's a nice piece of engineering and undoubtedly helps with downforce, but with how often it deploys and hides away (it opens and closes at around 60 miles per hour), I can't help but wonder how many duty cycles it will endure before it needs adjustment or repair. It's not the prettiest thing when extended, either.
  • I've driven PDK-equipped Porsches before - even Panameras - but this is the best iteration of this seven-speed dual clutch yet. It's near seamless, with improved slow-speed tractability. There were still a few occasions when PDK locked out downshifts into high revs, but it was generally very obedient. I'm not sure if it's a range-wide software update for 2013 or whether the tuning is specific to GTS, but this might be the best DCT on the market.
  • A few years ago, Porsche changed its keys to appear like miniaturized silhouettes of the model you're driving, and the keys can even be color-coded to your car's paint. It's a costly flourish ($335), but hey, your valet will thank you.
  • Thanks to its hatchback configuration, the Panamera is surprisingly useful, but the aggressively raked backlight can distort one's rear view somewhat. Smart move to have two buttons for the power close, though - one that just closes it, and the other that locks the whole car.
  • How glad am I that the buzzkill start-stop feature can be defeated once and for all without resorting to fuse-pulling or reprogramming?
  • Thumb the button to awaken the quad-tipped exhaust and you'll be greeted with a wonderful roar from the quick-revving 4.8-liter V8. The sound is so good I still wished for more of it, but that could've been because my car was fitted with $1,240 in soundproof/heat-resistant glass. How about an additional stage, Porsche?

Di Resta laments safety car timing

Paul di Resta believes he could have done even better than his fourth place in Singapore if the safety car had not come out during the middle phase of the race. The Scotsman delivered the best result of his F1 career as he followed podium finisher Fernando Alonso across the line - but he reckoned that a top-three finish could even have been on the cards.

Raikkonen: Top five best possible

Taking the Hit: How Pedestrian-Protection Regs Make Cars Fatter

Think modern cars look bloated? Of course you do. Part of what you’re seeing is the effect of European and Asian pedestrian-protection requirements that went live last decade. The idea is to leave enough space beneath the hood to keep a struck pedestrian’s head from caving it in far enough to hit the top of the [...]

Raikkonen fears Lotus will struggle

Kimi Raikkonen thinks Lotus is set to struggle in the Singapore Grand Prix after lapping two seconds off the pace in Friday practice . The Finn was 12th in both sessions, with his team-mate Romain Grosjean 15th and 10th. Raikkonen reckons that the two-second gap to the front in practice was not fuel-related, but an accurate gauge of Lotus's current speed around Marina Bay.

Quick Spin: 2013 Kia Soul ! 2.0L

2013 Kia Soul

Now that I really think about it, it turns out I actually know quite a few Kia Soul owners. Three of my friends have them, a friend's mom just bought one, and even my building's maintenance guy has one. Every time I talk to any of these people, they make a point of telling me just how much they enjoy owning a Soul and how the quirky Kia is just about perfect for their respective needs. When this red Molten one showed up in my parking lot, the maintenance guy spent a good 15 minutes inspecting it from top to bottom, seeing how it compares to the last-generation Plus model that he holds so dear.

There's good reason for all the commotion, too. The Soul offers an interesting package that offers good looks, functionality, technology, efficiency and refinement in droves, but does so in a way that attracts people who like vehicles with good ground clearance and a commanding seating position. Wrap all that in an incredibly affordable package, and there's indeed a recipe for success here.

Driving Notes
  • The uplevel 2.0-liter inline-four got a much-needed massaging during the 2012 model year refresh, and as a result, power has been upgraded from 142 horsepower and 137 pound-feet of torque to 164 hp and 148 lb-ft, meaning...
  • There's ample power on tap without a huge sacrifice in efficiency. Even with this more potent powerplant, fuel economy is rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg highway. The base 1.6-liter engine that we previously tested is down by 26 hp and 25 lb-ft but only offers one extra MPG in both the city and highway cycles.
  • Kia's new six-speed automatic transmission offers smooth shifts, even when jumping down a couple of gears for passing on the highway. The transmission will run a gear up all the way up to its redline before changing cogs, but if you insist on doing so, you'll be punished with lots of buzzy engine noise.
  • The 18-inch wheels of this tester look really sharp and help drive home the funky/cool design of the Soul, but combined with the P235/45R18 Nexen tires, they can make for a harsh ride on less-than-ideal surfaces.
  • Having an upright windshield and large greenhouse might be great for visibility, but wind noise takes a hit. Thankfully the upgraded Infinity stereo has no problem offering good sound quality when it's turned up - you'll be doing that often to wipe out the wind noise on the highway.
  • This top-level ! model - that's pronounced, "Exclaim" - offers leather seats (heated up front) as part of the $2,500 premium package. My test car had just under 500 miles on the odometer and the hide already looked worn in places, especially on the rear bench.
  • However, those rear seats are comfortable and quite spacious. I had no complaints from passengers and though I'm admittedly only five-foot, seven inches, I found ample amounts of headroom and legroom. Fold those seats flat and you'll be rewarded with 53.4 cubic feet of cargo space, too.
  • That said, the rest of the interior looks and feels top-notch, with nicely grained plastics in a two-tone black-and-tan color palette throughout the cabin. Specific elements like the leather-wrapped steering wheel and padded leather trim on the doors give an added element of luxury, too - welcome niceties in a car with a sub-$25k price tag.
  • Actually, make that sub-$24k. Even this fully loaded Soul ! with the premium package and accessories like a cargo net, rear bumper applique and auto-dimming mirror only stickers for $23,575, including $775 for destination. With a price like that (not to mention Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile warranty), it's no wonder this car continues to be an enormous success.

Report: GM, CAW reach tentative agreement

Canadian Auto Workers

Automotive News reports General Motors and the Canadian Auto Workers have reached a tentative labor agreement that will see the automaker invest $692.8 million into Canadian facilities over the life of the four year-deal. The two groups closed a 30-hour negotiating session that touched on everything from wages and benefits, to plant closings and new model manufacturing. The agreement covers around 8,200 workers currently, and GM has agreed to add or maintain 1,750 positions over the next four years. That means the automaker will postpone the consolidation of the company's Oshawa plant, where the current Chevrolet Impala is assembled. The manufacturer had planned to completely shutter the line, impacting around 2,000 workers.

GM will continue with plans to assemble the next-generation Impala at its Hamtramck facility, but will now also build the 2014 model on one shift in Oshawa. The move will employ around 750 Canadian workers, though that number may grow if the production is moved to two shifts later in 2014.

Even so, the CAW isn't entirely happy with the proposed settlement. The union was not able to secure the production of another vehicle. Union leaders say that's largely due to the fact that GM is in market share decline in Canada.

As you may recall, the CAW recently reached a similar tentative agreement with Ford.

Official: Audi shows third-gen S3

Just a day after the 2013 Audi A3 Sportback broke cover, the S3 rolls into the frame. It's obvious that Audi would like everyone to pay close attention to what's under the hood, since the first 11 paragraphs of the accompanying press release deal solely with the brand new 2.0-liter TFSI engine. Created with this specific car in mind, it has the same displacement as the previous S3 engine but that's where the commonalities end.

You'll be interested in the output of 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet - all of that torque available from 1,800 rpm - and the bolt from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds with the six-speed S-tronic, 5.4 seconds in the six-speed manual. Other details will please diehard gearheads, like the supplemental use of direct injection on top of the FSI, the lightweight aluminum-silicon alloy cylinder head, twin balance shafts, the new thermal management system and the fact that it weighs 11 pounds less than the previous engine and gets better gas mileage.

Other accoutrements just for the S3 include progressive steering and pushbutton launch control, wrapped in a hot hatch that has lost 132 pounds compared to its antecedent. It will go on sale early next year, with Germans paying €38,900 ($50,699 U.S.) for the privilege of ownership. A press release below has all the details you can handle.

Video: Band shoots music video in own cars, Honda surprises them with Jimmy Kimmel Live stunt

Monsters Calling Home band - video screencap

We'd like to believe that corporations have the ability to do something nice without an ulterior motive, that a company can just be good without angling for a bump in consumer sentiment, brand awareness or sales. This is not one of those times, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the "Honda Loves You Back" campaign is doing a bunch of nice things for Honda fans.

The latest involves the LA-based band Monsters Calling Home, which shot a couple of its music videos entirely in Hondas owned by various band members, proving that, yes, you can play a set of drums in the back of a Fit. Honda noticed one video in particular for the song "Fight to Keep" (below) and decided to love the band back with a special surprise. The band was lured to a location in LA under the ruse of playing the song live for a room of Honda executives, but the carmaker had other plans.

Instead, Monsters Calling Home was ushered across the street to the studio where ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live is taped. You can guess what happened next, or better yet, scroll down to watch the band's reaction to getting their big break courtesy of a carmaker.

Honda has done a few other things as part of its "Honda Loves You Back" campaign, including throwing a parade for a guy who drove his Accord over 1,000,000 miles and making Jack-o-Lanterns that feature customer faces. Are these actions entirely altruistic? No, and we played our part by even telling you about it, but we doubt recipients like Monsters Calling Home even care.
