24 Hours of LeMons Race Cars We’d Like To See, Part 2

In Part 1 of the 24 Hours of LeMons Wish List, we yearned for such excellent racing machines as the Renault Fuego, the Ford EXP, and the Chrysler Cordoba. We’re hoping that prospective LeMons teams have taken note and are now searching for sub-500-buck examples of the fine machines that made the list, but perhaps [...]

Report: Health Canada clamps down on Targa Newfoundland over collectable Marlboro suit

Zahir Rana Enzo Wreck

We're sure you remember Zahir Rana, the gentleman who piloted a Ferrari Enzo into the Atlantic Ocean during last year's Targa Newfoundland. When the gentleman took his co-pilot and his car for a swim, he happened to be wearing a racing suit once worn by Rubens Barrichello. Back when the Formula One racer drove for Ferrari, the team was sponsored by Marlboro, which meant the cigarette company's logo was plastered all over the the suit. As it turns out, Health Canada takes a dim view of tobacco advertising during any racing event, and despite the fact that Rana had bought the signed suit at a charity auction as a piece of racing history, the government agency took offense to photos from the race depicting Rana in full Marlboro regalia.

According to Wheels.ca, Targa President Bob Giannou found himself on the raw end of phone calls and letters from Health Canada, informing him of "prohibitions regarding the promotion of tobacco products," even if the reference is historical.

Does that mean Canadian officials are going to block the public appearance of the hordes of vintage race cars sponsored by the likes of Rothmans, Marlboro, John Player Special, Camel, Lucky Strike, Kool and Skoal just to name a few? Like it or not, tobacco and racing have a long and storied history together, and attempting to censor that history from the public eye is downright foolish. Good luck, Health Canada.

ATS Take Firm Grip on CTC title

Struggles Continue for Ferrari and Williams The Classic Teams Championship competitors arrived at Canada’s iconic Mosport International Raceway with several new drivers in key seats as the pre-season favourites for the team title face an uphill battle. Ferrari signed F2 driver, Berker Barutcu, but a non-showing at Mosport meant Escuderia Prancing Horse remained with two drivers for the fourth week in a row. Another lead team, Williams, fielded three smi-racers but a crash at treacherous Turn 2 for Henri Salminen following an unusual Lap One spin, left the team relying on Audrius Valantiejus for the bulk of their points. Meanwhile ATS continued to be the surprise of the season, as a staggering 42 point haul extended their lead over the on-form Ligier team to 30 points. ATS can’t relax, however, [...]

Video: Watch Chris Harris give the AMG Hammer a go

Chris Harris AMG Hammer

Brace yourself for your weekly dose of Chris Harris envy. Everyone's favorite automotive video personality and UK writer recently stopped by the AMG facility to take a tour and get cozy with the Mercedes-Benz factory modification outfit's heritage collection. Harris had his pick of everything in the stable, and while there were undoubtedly many models worth his consideration, in the end, the choice of which vehicle to wring out in the rain was a simple one. After all, there are only so many chances in life to snug one's self into a 1986 AMG Hammer.

While the machine's 381 horsepower is paltry by today's standards, this coupe holds down a place in the automotive pantheon of legendary machinery. With a 6.0-liter V8 sucking through a set of AMG four-valve heads, the Hammer effectively bent the BMW M5 over to teach it a thing or two about large cars moving quickly. Watching the machine wag its tail all over the German countryside is a thing of bliss. Check it out below.

McNish flies in final practice

Allan McNish ensured a practice clean sweep for Audi by setting the fastest time so far this weekend in the final Silverstone 6 Hours practice session. As was the case in second practice, it was the R18 ultra of McNish and Tom Krsitensen which went fastest, with the Briton dropping down to a 1m43.628s late on in the session. That came in the middle of a string of fastest laps for the #2 R18, although McNish's stint was halted eight minutes from the flag when he clashed with the No.71 AF Corse Ferrari.

Report: Surgeon abandons car due to traffic, uses kid's bike to make operation on time

Filed under:

Dr. Catherine Baucom

Most of us are used to seeing doctors driving around in BMWs and Land Rovers, but Dr. Catherine Baucom, a surgeon in Louisiana, showed up to work on a pink kid's bicycle.

After getting stuck in a traffic jam when a car accident shut down a stretch of Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge, Dr. Baucom showed how dedicated she is to her work. Instead of waiting in the traffic and postponing a scheduled surgery, she left the interstate and headed to a friend's house nearby to seek alternative transportation. As you can see from the image above, all the fellow doctor had to offer Dr. Baucom was his 7-year-old daughter's bicycle and, for safety, a matching princess helmet.

While it's not clear exactly how far she had to ride the bike, it was undoubtedly a challenge since Dr. Baucom is almost six feet tall and the bike is kiddie-sized. After being questioned by police along the way and explaining her situation, law enforcement gave Dr. Baucom an escort to the hospital.

Not only did she make it to her patient on time, she got to keep the princess helmet as a present.

Unlike in the earlier session, it was the R18 ultra of Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish that was fastest with a lap in 1m45.645s, putting it 0.214 seconds clear of the e-tron Quattro of Marcel Fassler/Andre Lotterer/Benoit Treluyer. The #2 car's table-topping time came despite a collision between McNish and the Larbre Corvette of GTE Am driver Pascal Gibon at Brooklands.

BMW Zagato Roadster: The Much-More-Attractive Z4 [2012 Pebble Beach]

Update: We’ve added photos from the Zagato Roadster’s debut. Still no sign of that double-bubble roof, though. When BMW released a shadowy image of the Zagato Roadster prior to its Pebble Beach debut, we suspected that the Zagato Coupé that came before it must’ve generated some considerable buzz. And we were right. The decision to [...]

2013 Acura ILX Long-Term Test Intro: Trying to Combine Luxury with the Civic Si

Just over a decade ago, Acura’s lineup included the NSX and the Integra—both among the most fun-to-drive cars in their segments, and two fairly iconic pieces of machinery. Since then, Honda’s luxury brand has introduced a line of funky-faced, tweener-sized cars that James Spader talks up in TV ads. Away from the sound booth where [...]

Paffett frustrated by missed chance

Gary Paffett has described last weekend's Nurburgring DTM race as a "missed opportunity" to further strengthen his position at the head of the championship. The HWA Mercedes driver arrived at the circuit 26 points ahead of his team-mate Jamie Green, but with Bruno Spengler winning, the British driver's advantage has been cut to only 20 points with four races remaining and 100 points still available

Official: Land Rover LR2 gets updated look, turbo four power for 2013

2013 Land Rover LR2 - Front three-quarter view, static

Land Rover is being liberal with its amenities, distributing luxe features from its Range Rover Evoque, 2013 Range Rover and Jaguar sedans to its entry-level 2013 LR2. Right out front is a new engine: the same 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 pound-feet of torque found in the Evoque is now the sole engine offered in the LR2. It replaces the 3.2-liter six-cylinder and brings with it the benefits of being 88 pounds lighter, having 10 more horsepower and 16 more pound-feet of torque. Shifting remains through a six-speed transmission with CommandShift for manual cog swapping.

Outside are three new potential hues: Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue. Those new paint selections set off tweaked design cues like the revised Xenon headlamps and LED taillamps, refreshed brightwork around the grille and fog lamps, and "paint detailing changes" made to the grille insert and fender vents.

2013 Land Rover LR2 - rear-three-quarter static view2013 Land Rover LR2 - freshened dashboard

Inside, the center console gets a seven-inch touchscreen that is mission control for the updated-but-optional hard-drive based navigation system, the "Say What You See" voice control operation, an available rearview camera with Hitch Assist. In addition, buyers will get to chose between one of two Meridian surround sound stereos - the ultimate having 825-watts and 17-speakers. A new five-inch screen lives between the dials in the dash cluster, the steering wheel now fitted with switches to navigate menus that appear there.

On the practical side, the Terrain Response dial disappears, replaced by buttons, while an intelligent electronic parking brake keeps tabs on the temperature of the brakes and how much clamping force is being applied. A pushbutton start system has been adopted, relegating the key dock to history.

How much will the goodies cost you? It will take $37,250 to get in the 2013 LR2 door, a $700 bump over the 2012 model. The HSE goes up by $750 to $39,750, while the HSE LUX is $850 more dear at $42,350. Why get an LR2 instead of the similarly sized and far fresher Evoque, you ask? Presumably because the LR2 is still a lot cheaper - 2012 Evoque models start at $43,995. Besides, the LR2's more traditional and upright styling plays to a different audience than the fashion-forward Evoque.

You can peruse the press release below for more on the noteworthy changes before diving into the massive high-res gallery above. We expect to see the real thing in the metal at the Paris Motor Show late next month.

Flying Finns Invade SRFord Challenge at Brands Hatch

The SpecRacer Ford Challenge sailed across the pond to Kent, England, to visit the famous Brands Hatch GP course for Week 2.  This marked the first official visit to Brands for the series, and the track proved to be particularly well-suited for the SpecRacer Ford. Unlike Watkins Glen, though, Brands Hatch is one of those “rare” circuits that does not appear on many iRacing series schedules, so the track is less of a “fan favorite” than the Glen, and it typically doesn’t attract the same type of participation numbers.  This held true for the SpecRacer Ford Challenge schedule, which saw a fairly substantial dip in participation for Week 2.  Despite this dip, though, 398 SRF drivers still travelled to merry old England with to join in the online racing festivities, [...]

Video: Did a California company just perfect hover bike technology?

Aerofex hover bike - video screencap

Will we soon be commuting on real-life hovercraft soon? It depends on what you mean by "soon," "commuting" and "real-life."

Aerofex has released video showing its two-rotor, one-manned vehicle lifting off the ground, negotiating turns and landing.

But Gizmag says the most amazing claim from Aerofex concerns the tandem duct vehicle's guidance system. The company says its prototype uses no flight software or electronics of any kind to give the "pilot" complete control over pitch, roll and yaw. The gadget site, though, isn't totally convinced, stating the videos "appear to show successful test flights." The italics are Gizmag's.

Watching the video, it's hard not to be impressed by how well the prototype seems to work. It's also not hard to notice the complete lack of sound, leading us to believe the hoverbike is a long way from cruising down Main Street. Watch the silent test flight video below.

Biffle beats Keselowski to victory

Greg Biffle claimed his second NASCAR Sprint Cup win of the season by holding off Brad Keselowski in a green-white-chequered finish at Michigan. Roush Fenway racer Biffle inherited the lead six laps from the end when leader Jimmie Johnson slowed down with an engine problem, one of three similar issues for Hendrick Motorsports during the race. Keselowski put the pressure on Biffle on the final restart after the caution for Johnson, but the Penske driver could not quite regain the lead he previously held until being overtaken by Johnson with 10 laps remaining

Casey Stoner has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right ankle following his Indianapolis MotoGP qualifying crash. The Honda rider was taken for x-rays at the circuit medical centre as the initial suspicion was that he had sustained a fracture in the accident, but it was subsequently confirmed that damage was limited to the ligaments following the x-ray and an MRI scan

Monterey: Jaguar XJL Ultimate, XJ AWD show up at Pebble Beach

2013 Jaguar XJL Ultimate

Jaguar descended on the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance with two of its new models: the XJL Ultimate and the 3.0-liter XJ all-wheel drive. Built for chauffeuring the well-to-do about in style, the XJL Ultimate (above in black) packs a luxury-lined interior complete with reclining and massaging rear seats, a rear business table and a set of champagne flutes that store conveniently under a rear table. Of course, those vessels would be all but useless without a champagne chiller. Fortunately, Jaguar graced the rear cabin with just such an appliance between the rear seats. Both rear passengers get to enjoy an iPad and keyboard as well.

The 2013 XJ in red, meanwhile, showed off its all-new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and all-wheel-drive system. The blown six-cylinder delivers 335 horsepower to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the all-wheel drive can shuttle power to the front and rear tires in a split of up to 50:50. Jaguar says the addition of all-wheel drive hasn't sullied the driving dynamics of the XJ line (or the XF, where it also appears with the same engine), and we're hoping that's true. The drivetrain uses a stop/start system to keep fuel consumption low. Check out the live galleries above and below for a closer look at both machines.
