Monsters of Grip: Nine Summer-Performance Tires Tested

Even armed with huge horsepower, wind-tunnel development, and a fear-free driver, cars wouldn’t be able to attain big speed without tires capable of  handling the inertial forces of 2700-plus rotations per minute. Johnson takes fourth Brickyard win

Jimmie Johnson dominated on the way to his fourth Brickyard 400 win and his third NASCAR Sprint Cup points-paying victory of the season. The four-time Cup champion claimed the lead following the first round of pitstops, overtaking polesitter Denny Hamlin as they were leaving pit road. Once ahead, only pitstops and strategy gambles from Penske's Brad Keselowski and Roush Fenway's Greg Biffle led to any lead changes.

Lotus hopes rest on strategy – Boullier

Lotus boss Eric Boullier believes his team's best hope of beating Lewis Hamilton to victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix will depend on its tyre management - because its car does not have the outright pace to edge clear of McLaren. Hamilton has been in dominant form over the Hungaroring weekend, and ended up four tenths clear of Romain Grosjean to secure his first pole position since the Malaysian Grand Prix. That form has left Boullier in no doubt about where his team's car stacks up against McLaren – but that opportunities do still exist for it to triumph

Ben Spies does not think his big crash in United States Grand Prix qualifying will hamper him at all in Sunday's race, despite admitting that he might have injured a heel in the accident. Video: Watch a huge chunk of road debris hit a car head on

Its surprising enough when a pebble kicks up off the road and nicks the windshield. This, on the other hand, will give you nightmares.

A dash-cam video captured in - where else - Russia reveals just how frightening hazards of the road can be, when a car crash resulted in debris flying over the highway median barrier, slamming into the front of an oncoming Volkswagen Golf Plus. The mother and young child that were both in the VW escaped without injury.

This incident was not unlike the incident we reported on last year, in which a woman was recording video while driving when the truck in front of her kicked up a 2x4 off the road. Like this occurance, no one in the vehicle was hurt.

We've seen plenty of wild videos out of Russia, and its not just because so many inexplicable occurances take place out there. Because of the high number of groups attempting insurance fraud by inducing a collision, many Russians have turned to dash cams to make sure they have proof when things actually do go wrong.

Scroll down to watch the terrifying video for yourself.

Red Bull forced to alter engine mapping

Red Bull Racing will be forced to alter the engine mapping of its Renault power units from this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix after the FIA moved to close a loophole in the regulations, as predicted by AUTOSPORT yesterday . Although Red Bull's cars were deemed legal by the race stewards in Germany last weekend , they are believed to have been operating with engine maps that had reduced torque in the mid RPM range

Munoz earns dominant first Lights win

Carlos Munoz cruised to an emphatic maiden Indy Lights win in this weekend's race at Edmonton. The Colombian started from pole, and aside from a brief scrap with Esteban Guerrieri at the start, never looked threatened. He built up enough of a gap during the second half of the race that he was able to back off in the final laps and still cross the line 8.3 seconds ahead of Andretti team-mate Sebastian Saavedra

Report: Chrysler considering $200M investment to boost Pentastar V6 production

Pentastar V6 engine

The Pentastar V6 has been Chrysler's magic bullet as of late, combining solid power and impressive fuel efficiency. The do-all powerplant has found its way into a just about any Chrysler Group vehicle with an engine bay to accept it. Jeep and Journey alike have enjoyed the benefits of the dual-overhead cam 3.6-liter mill.

Chrysler is pondering an investment of $200 million into its Detroit Mack I facility to increase Pentastar production. Meanwhile, Chrysler plans to halt production of the aging 3.7-liter V6 at the Mack II facility. The 200 employees that were laid off by the idling of Mack II will be reemployed at other Chrysler Group facilities in the area.

According to the Automotive News report, if an agreement can be reached with the local government, the Mack I plant would switch over from producing the 4.7-liter V8 to the popular 3.6-liter Pentastar engine. Currently, the Pentastar is also produced in Trenton, Michigan, and Saltillo, Mexico.

If the proposal was approved, Chrysler will not only produce the 3.6-liter version of the Pentastar, but also intends on building variants with different displacements.

Chrysler canceled its usual summer shutdown, and the Trenton and Saltillo facilities have been working overtime to meet demand for the popular engine.

McLaren: Vettel penalty inevitable

McLaren sporting director Sam Michael believes that Sebastian Vettel would not have been able to complete the pass on Jenson Button without going off the track, meaning that a post-race penalty was inevitable . Vettel overtook Button around the outside at the hairpin on the penultimate lap of the German Grand Prix to take second place, but used asphalt run-off beyond the track limits to do so.

Confirmed: BMW to introduce "On Demand" service in U.S.

BMW Financial Services next month is kicking off BMW On Demand USA - a service the company already provides in European cities - that enables people to easily rent a BMW by the hour, day or week from dealerships.

The first location, BMW of Manhattan, is considered a pilot, and will have about 100 328i sedans in the fleet. According to Ed Robinson, president of BMW Financial, the makeup of the fleet will change over time. But the all-328i lineup to start reflects the newest product from BMW and the one the company wants to push right now.

Other logical cities to follow will be Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Miami. But the service could easily spread to smaller cities with smaller fleets.

Pricing for checking a 328i out like a library book will be announced in August. The website to go to is www.bmwondemandusa.com.

The business model for the program has multiple layers. It gives dealers in urban centers a fleet of cars from which to provide extended test drives. It also gives luxury car owners a readily available pool of premium cars to rent that you can't get from Hertz or Avis. And it is part of a longer-term trend BMW sees of an increasing number of urban dwellers not wanting to own cars at all. "We have seen the research that shows as cities become more dense, the desire for car ownership goes down, but the desire to drive cars to get out of town stays constant," says Robinson.

In time, the On Demand fleet will be expanded to include other BMWs like the new 7 Series coming later this year, X5 and X3, and possibly specialty vehicles like the M3 and M5. Robinson said that with specialty vehicles, though, drivers would probably go through an extra layer of qualification.

"BMW On Demand USA goes beyond any existing premium-rental or car-sharing programs in this market," said Robinson. Indeed, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, nor Audi have any similar service that is scaled like this. "This is a great opportunity for anyone who is considering buying a BMW or someone who wants a luxury car, premium service and ultimate driving experience for that special occasion, weekend getaway, business trip to experience being part of the BMW family."

Report: Hyundai working on "Fluidic Precision" design for next Sonata

Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik recently told Automobile magazine that it's popular "fluidic sculpture" design language won't stand still as it evolves with Hyundai's lineup in the coming years.

"You'll see even more maturity with the new Santa Fe, and future cars will feature something we're internally calling Fluidic Precision, where the forms might be a little less extroverted," Krafcik said. "You'll see that with the next Sonata, the design of which has just been frozen."

Krafcik also confirmed that Hyundai will introduce an all-wheel-drive version of the Genesis sedan in its next iteration, which will likely be shown as a concept vehicle later this year. Furthermore, Hyundai is considering upgrading the Genesis coupe to take on the likes of the the BMW 3 Series.

And while most automakers decline to discuss future products, Krafcik pulled the Hyundai's curtain back just a little. We're more than likely going to see a premium crossover in Hyundai's future lineup, but not likely to see a convertible, minivan or pickup truck.
