2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe First Drive: Fewer Doors, Bigger Back Seat

The coupe designation has been blurred by the marketing minions, but we ordinarily understand it to describe a car with two doors and a formal trunk. Beyond that, we tend to perceive coupes as sexier than their sedan equivalents, with a suggestion of more performance. (more…)

Report: Terrafugia flying car completes first round of test flights

terrafugia flying car at new york show

The Terrafugia Transition flying car is closer to becoming a real road-going reality. The Transition finished its first round of Federal Aviation Administration certification flight tests (there are five more rounds to go) at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, and is headed for on-road drive testing.

It's another small step toward the flying cars we've been promised since at least the halcyon days of the "better living through technology" 1950s. The Transition was supposed to start deliveries by the end of this year at a cost under $200,000. The price has swollen to around $279,000 and while Terrafugia is happy to accept your deposit, expect at least a year or two before taking delivery. Still, if you have the money and an desire to be Elroy Jetson, it looks like you may eventually get your wish.

Transpo Bill Preserves Transit Funding, Wastes Opportunities For Progress

In H.R.7 – the transpo bill so backwards even the House couldn’t pass it — the roads-only crowd threw transit riders under the bus, as it were, eliminating dedicated funding for transit, which was left to fend for itself off scraps from the general fund.

Hamilton: Clash won’t change approach

Lewis Hamilton says his late-race incident with Pastor Maldonado in Valencia will not have any impact on how he goes racing in next weekend's British Grand Prix. Stoner wins as Lorenzo taken out

Casey Stoner drew level with Jorge Lorenzo at the head of the MotoGP points table by winning the Dutch TT at Assen on a day when Lorenzo was taken out at the first corner by Alvaro Bautista. Gresini Honda rider Bautista was trying to make up ground at the start following the qualifying crash that left him eighth on the grid, and outbraked five rivals down the inside before falling and sliding into Lorenzo's Yamaha, taking both out on the spot. That left Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Stoner clear to storm away from the field in unison

Ecclestone could fund London GP

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says he would consider throwing financial weight behind any attempt to stage a grand prix in London in the future - ahead of a promotional event by sponsor Santander on Thursday evening to unveil its idea for a track around the city. Just a week after it was revealed that one option being considered for the London Olympic stadium is to turn it in to a grand prix venue, Ecclestone has reiterated his belief that the British capital is the perfect venue to hold an F1 race. Santander is ramping up interest in the British Grand Prix, which it is title sponsor of, by hosting an event that will reveal how a grand prix in London could look – having commissioned a proper evaluation of a potential venue and commissioning a CGI film of how the race would appear on television.

Kimi Raikkonen declared himself unmoved by second place in the European Grand Prix as he felt Lotus should have had the pace to win. The Finn battled past Lewis Hamilton's McLaren late on to secure second behind relatively comfortable winner Fernando Alonso's Ferrari. Sainz quickest in Brands Hatch test

Carlos Sainz Jr went fastest by almost half a second as the British Formula 3 International Series prepared for this weekend's Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit round with a pair of one-hour test sessions. Stepping up to Premium Plus takes it to $42,900 and top-of-the-line Prestige zooms to $48,800. Each strata, we assume, adds more standard features. But, apparently, the build-your-own Allroad site isn't quite finished and doesn't detail the differences. It also warns the images shown are European spec and refers to the wagon's engine as being powered by, "petrol."

First thing we chose was the new Moonlight Blue Metallic paint. That added $475. If you aren't big fans of those black fenders on our blue car, you can go with the "full paint finish" package for $1,000. The configurator showed another bug by insisting we had to add an exterior appearance package with contrasting body cladding and stainless steel underbody protection, but wouldn't allow us to.

No matter, we forged ahead with the $3,250 Driver Assist Package, which sounds like pure sorcery with adjustable steering effort, throttle response and shift style as well as adaptive cruise control.

The Chestnut Brown leather looks pretty nice by itself, but we went ahead and added the $850 layered oak anyway. Rear side airbags ($350) are a must as are rear sun shades ($250), bringing our Allroad to a whopping $56,170. Add another $1,000 for the full paint finish, and don't forget $895 for destination.

Grosjean: Lotus closing in on perfect GP

Romain Grosjean believes Lotus has taken another step closer towards producing the weekend-long form it needs to take a breakthrough victory - and that this weekend's European Grand Prix in Valencia will be one of its best chances to win yet. Despite Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen being frontrunners in many races this year, Lotus is not among the five teams that have already won in 2012. But after his charge to second place in Canada, and with Valencia expected to produce the sort of hot conditions in which Lotus has thrived this year, Grosjean is very optimistic about his chances.

More Pace And Better Style With Less Menace

2013 BMW M6

With the dust just settling on recent tests of the $113,995 BMW M6 convertible and the start of U.S. deliveries in late May, we now get to attack some traffic-free Spanish two-lanes and the 3.4-mile track at the Ascari Race Resort in the third-generation, or F12, BMW M6 coupe, which sells for the "discount" price of just $106,995.

Let's cut to the chase a bit: The M6 coupe is far more convincing as a big M car with this bi-turbo V8 powertrain than either the M6 convertible or M5 four-door.

Of these three 560-horsepower platform-sharing M cars, it's definitely this sleek coupe that takes home the prize on dynamics. It's some 65 pounds lighter than the M5 and almost 290 pounds lighter than the convertible M6, so just on those numbers, one would certainly hope for a crisper, more responsive road and track manner.

Almost as a way of driving home this chief difference between the intentions of the coupe and convertible, BMW dressed all of the M6 coupes we were testing in both the optional five-spoke 20-inch forged M wheels and big lightweight optional carbon ceramic brake discs. The convertibles on hand at this European drive event all had standard 19-inchers and compound discs. And thus the drop tops were not allowed on the track at all, and that felt right.

NASCAR makes further aero tweak

NASCAR has announced further technical changes to Sprint Cup cars in an effort to enhance overtaking and prevent teams from getting unfair advantages with their mechanical set-ups. Capello not blaming McNish after crash

Audi veteran Rinaldo Capello says he does not blame Allan McNish for missing out on the chance to add a fourth Le Mans 24 Hours victory to his tally on the Italian's final crack at the race. McNish spun the #2 R18 e-tron Quattro into the wall at the Porsche Curves in the 22nd hour of the race as the two Audi hybrids contested the lead while on differing fuel strategies. The Scot recovered the car to the pits, but lost a lap while its front end was replaced costing the crew any realistic chance of victory

H16: #1 Audi storms away in lead

Andre Lotterer stretched the #1 Audi e-tron's Le Mans 24 Hours lead further still as he set a rapid pace through the 16th hour. Although pitting for tyres and fuel while the chasing #2 e-tron only took on fuel took a little out of Lotterer's advantage, his string of 3m27s laps in the early-morning sunshine meant his lead over team-mate Dindo Capello stood at over a minute and a half at the end of the hour. Audi still continues to hunt for a top-four sweep, with the #4 Audi running solidly third and the #3 ultra taking 10s-15s per lap out of the fourth-placed Rebellion Lola-Toyota, but yet to get back on the same lap as the top LMP1 privateer

Video: Watch a paddle of 5,000 ducks disrupt Chinese traffic

Ducks cross the road in China

What do you call a giant group of ducks? Well, that depends. If those ducks are in the water, they are most commonly referred to as a raft. In the air, they could be a flock or a skein. But what if you came across 5,000 ducks crossing the road in China?

We'd call that a traffic jam.

Apparently, a farmer in China herds his horde of feathered friends to a nearby pond every year for feeding, breeding or whatever it is that ducks need to do in the water. According to a report from CBS News This Morning, the farmer claims he never loses a single duck. Guess he keeps them all in a row, eh?

See the spectacle by scrolling down below.

NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series Pocono Report

A trip to Long Pond, Pennsylvania for some racing around Pocono Raceway was exactly what some drivers needed to get their NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) season back on track. Unlike any other track, Pocono offers three vastly different corners, and the longest straightaway in NASCAR. These factors combine to give drivers a feeling much like racing a road course. It also emphasizes compromise, it is rare to have a car perfect everywhere, but luckily for competitors, it doesn’t have to be perfect.. It just has to be better than anyone else. In preparation for the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) race, it is no surprise to see higher level drivers racing down to the NiCAS, to get much needed tuning time with their racecars before Tuesday’s big [...]

Official: AMG vehicles pose for family portrait to celebrate 45-year anniversary, tease future

AMG vehicle family overhead shot for 45th anniversary

A 45th anniversary isn't one we're used to breaking out the Perrier-Jouet for, but since the anniversary in question happens to celebrate AMG, we'll get some corks flying. The biggest news this year for the in-house tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz is the A45 AMG, representing not just an unexpected end of the pool for AMG to dive into, but an entirely new - and compact - body of water. More than a makeover of the A-Class, it is the first peek at the makeover of AMG as it prepares for the "AMG Performance 50" on its 50th anniversary.

The initiative will include "additional high-performance compact cars" and a bump from 22 AMG vehicles to 30. There are eight models under wraps in the photo, three of them look to be hatchbacks, one in the left row of three and two in the back row of five. One of them is certainly the A45 AMG, another one could be a B-Class AMG model. In that back row between the two hatches is what looks like a tiny crossover that could suggest a GLA AMG, and the two cars on the left of that row look like two small coupes, one of them perhaps the SLC. The last two cars, next to the SUVs, are a large sedan in front, perhaps the 2013 S-Class, and in the rear what looks like another coupe of unknown provenance - or maybe the CLA? And where is the dead-sexy CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake?

Other AMG directives are more efficient powertrains throughout the range, development of lighter construction techniques, more all-wheel drive models beyond CUVs, more AMG Performance Centers, becoming the sole development center for Mercedes' V12 engines and a hint that lines like the CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG "will be extended further over the coming years." Scroll down for all the details on AMG's five-year plans.

Report: Will.i.am gets his unplated "Delorean" impounded

Will.i.am's custom car - white - front three-quarter view

Police in Los Angeles have impounded rapper Will.i.am's custom car. The recording artist was reportedly driving the gullwing coupe around the city with no license plate. When officers stopped the Black Eyed Peas frontman and checked the registration, they found an issue and sent the car to lockup. Will.i.am was cited for both the registration issue and failing to display a license plate, but was otherwise cooperative. A friend drove him from the scene. Police say the vehicle will be held until the proper paperwork can be organized.

As you may recall, the car, shown above, is the first from Will.I.am's new company, IAMAUTO. The prototype creation is understood to use pieces borrowed a donor Delorean and a Dodge Challenger and was built by the team at West Coast Customs. Will.i.am hopes to start serial production of the car near where he grew up in Los Angeles as a way to give jobs back to his hard luck community.
