Franchitti lauds Honda’s fightback

Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti has paid tribute to engine manufacturer Honda for the technical step that it was able to take between qualifying last week and Sunday's race. Franchitti and Ganassi team-mate Scott Dixon qualified in the middle of the field on a grid where rival Chevrolet had locked out nine of the top 10 places. But the Scot, who became the 10th third-time winner of the race with his victory, said that he was surprised by the extent to which Honda had managed to turn things around.

Official: Volkswagen Scirocco GTS commemorates 30-year anniversary of original

Volkswagen Scirocco GTS

It's been 30 years since the very first Volkswagen Scirocco GTS rolled off the assembly line. Featuring little more than a slightly reworked front valance and some trippy decal work, the original Scirocco GTS was likely most notable for the fact that it was the first in the family to rock a blacked-out B-pillar. Now Volkswagen is paying homage to the machine with a new Scirocco GTS.

Unveiled at the Auto Mobil International, the modern hatch rocks the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, complete with 210 horsepower, as the rest of the Scirocco range. A set of racing stripes spread from hood to lift gate lend the car a bit of sportiness, but the biggest changes can be found on the front and rear fascias.

Volkswagen tweaked both bumper covers with a unique design, and a new set of flared side skirts are part of the package as well. GTS trim also comes with those flashy five-spoke 18-inch wheels, and the keen-eyed among you may have spotted the familiar roof spoiler and rear diffuser. Both are lifted from the Scirocco R. Maybe GTS stands for GoT Stripes?

Jones: Webber should go to Ferrari

Mark Webber should seriously consider a move to Ferrari if a proper offer is made, according to former world champion Alan Jones. Jones, the last Australian to win the Formula 1 title, believes that Webber would find himself revitalised by an opportunity to race for the Maranello team. Speaking in a podcast put together by the Australian Grand Prix organisers, Jones said: "Mark has already done one of the two things that most Formula 1 drivers would like to do, and that's win Monaco

Ottinger Survives Schoenburg’s Charge, Wins Charlotte

Nick Ottinger scored his second win of the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway, holding hard-charging polesitter Brian Schoenburg at bay on a late restart before the latter’s motor expired with four laps remaining. After starting eighth, Ottinger ran at or near the front throughout the online race and took advantage of misfortunes that befell Ray Alfalla and Steve Sheehan to move into contention as the laps wound-down. After grabbing the lead from Byron Daley with 29 laps remaining, Ottinger took the checkered flag ahead of Alfalla, Kevin King, Patrick Baldwin and Daley, hoisting himself into the middle of the championship picture in the bargain. The last quarter of the 200 lap, 300 mile race was packed with action. The final scheduled pit stop on Lap [...]

Jenson Button felt Heikki Kovalainen 'got the balance wrong' as the Caterham driver held off Button's McLaren for most of the Monaco Grand Prix. Kovalainen got up to 13th amid the startline crash, while Button had to go wide to avoid Kamui Kobayashi's flying Sauber and found himself behind the Caterham.

Report: Jeep to push for more sales in China

black jeep wrangler dragon concept

Jeep
is one of the most famous brands in the world, and that recognition helps fuel sales and make the marque one of the shiniest gems in the Chrysler crown of brands. The world's most voracious car market, China, knows and loves Jeep vehicles well enough to fuel a sales boom that's got the company looking to add dealers and re-fire local production.

Chinese buyers snap up Jeep branded merchandise wherever they can find it, but the actual Jeep dealer network in China is only 120 strong. Still, sales were up 63 percent last year, and Jeep CEO Mike Manley is sure that could rise even further with better availability. "Our brand awareness and consideration is running way ahead of where our actual volumes are," Manley said.

Jeep was actually one of the first western automakers to make a foray into China when American Motors Corporation set up Beijing Jeep in the 1980s. Since that time, Jeep has gone through ownership and cashflow tumult, stopping Chinese production in 2006. Now, Chrysler is looking for a partner to work with so that more Jeeps can be available to buyers that are starving for the vehicles they perceive so fondly.

If production within China isn't re-started, Jeep may become just a memory. Right now, the Jeep models that are available in China are imported, and carry hefty price tags because of duties. Popularity of SUVs is high in China, and other manufacturers may not have the same image as Jeep, but with local production and lower prices, not to mention more dealers, availability may trump the Jeep mystique.

Zanella wins race two with late pass

Christopher Zanella backed up his pole position by winning round six of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at the Nurburgring. Zanella lost the lead on lap two to Saturday's race winner Mihai Marinescu, the Romanian using the boost system to fire past the polesitter into Turn 1. But Zanella kept his cool, the Swiss driver shadowing Marinescu until there was just four laps left before pulling off a carbon copy move into the first corner.

Vettel pins hopes on race strategy

Sebastian Vettel reckons anything is possible in Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix and remains positive that his strategy of starting on the soft compound option tyre could play into his hands during the race. Last year's winner from pole, Vettel gave up on his qualifying attempt in Q3 in order to save his tyres, and will start from ninth on the grid after Pastor Maldonado takes his 10-place grid penalty. But while the world champion accepted that starting mid-pack made his race more challenging, he suggested that being able to run longer on his first stint than all those that qualified on supersoft tyres could play into his hands in terms of track position.

Official: Mercedes-Benz rolls out the gold carpet in Cannes

Mercedes-Benz at 2012 Cannes International Film Festival

We've seen some rather unfortunately garish chrome-jobs in our day, and yes, some have even ladled on the shiny stuff in gold. Many of those have also been Mercedes-Benz vehicles. But while we've come to expect that kind of bling from owners with cash coming out of their Ferragamo shoes, we didn't expect the same treatment to be carried out by Mercedes-Benz itself on its own vehicles.

We were wrong. Because that's precisely what the German automaker had in store for this year's Cannes International Film Festival. For the awarding of the prestigious 65th Palme d'Or, Benz rolled out a fleet of vehicles wrapped in gold in which it shuttled around movie stars and other celebrities. Among the attendees were the CLS four-door coupe, ML sport-ute and S-Class limousine.

The AMG division was also on hand to show off the new SL65 and offer celebrities a chance to drive their latest offerings. Hopefully those convinced on the Cote d'Azur to place an order will have the good sense to forgo the gilded treatment, though. See what Daimler had to say for itself in the press release below.

iRacer Profile – Rocco Barone

Perhaps even more than the basic skills and techniques of motorsports, iRacing provides a window into the mental game of racing.  After all, it’s one thing to turn a fast lap or two in practice or qualifying, quite another to cope with the mental pressures of running lap after lap with another sim racer breathing down your neck; or vice versa. Monaco tunnel DRS ban to remain

Formula 1 drivers will once again be banned from using DRS in the tunnel at the Monaco Grand Prix on safety grounds, AUTOSPORT can reveal. Last season, drivers campaigned in the build-up to the race for DRS to be disabled through the Monaco tunnel because of concerns that it could put them in a dangerous situation if they were forced to use it there throughout practice and qualifying.

Studio Effect turns your snapshots into studio glamor shots

Filed under:

If you sift through eBay Motors like a junkyard dog looks for bones, you may have already come across a Studio Effect image from Dimostra. They look a little out of place in an eBay Motors auction gallery, perhaps because they're a bit too perfect compared to the usual lot of hastily snapped images. The irony, however, is that these glossy-looking glamor shots don't come from a physical studio at all, but are rather the result of renting the Photoshop expertise of Dimostra's digital artists to turn those hastily snapped images into something special.

This Chicago-based company offers a number of services related to vehicle photography, but the Studio Effect is what caught our eye. Company spokesman and partner David Nawrocki tells Autoblog that many hours of Photoshop manipulation go into each Studio Effect image despite the price of just $49 per image. Doesn't sound reasonable to you? Try finding an independent digital artist with skills like this and see what he charges. That price includes a digital copy of the resulting Studio Effect image, but Dimostra also offers accessories on which you can emblazon your Studio Effect shot - everything from a keychain and coffee mug to a T-shirt or framed gallery picture.

We were curious how the process works, so we sent Dimostra some images of one of our own cars - a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo - to see what they could do. Turnaround time was a few days, during which time the company helped us choose the best image to use from ones we already had, as well as offered tips on how to go out and shoot the sort of image that results in the best looking Studio Effect shot. Check out the results in the gallery above, as well as some other before-and-after shots from the Dimostra artists.

Paffett cruises to home win at Brands

Gary Paffett continued his near-perfect start to the 2012 DTM season with a commanding victory in front of his home crowd at Brands Hatch. From pole position, the HWA Mercedes driver steadily built his lead up to almost three seconds over Bruno Spengler's fast-starting Schnitzer BMW by half-distance and eventually won by nearly twice that amount to increase his championship lead to 25 points over the Canadian.

2013 Nissan Altima

Nissan has released a passel of official photosd of the 2013 Nissan Altima, the sedan it "would like to make #1 if customers agree." While the new styling might take getting used to, the other changes are all welcomed: it's lighter, has a revised transmission, will return 38 miles per gallon if equipped with the four-cylinder, and starts at $21,500 before the $760 destination charge.

Now that the Altima and Toyota Camry are known quantities, the pending reveal of the Honda Accord will fill out the field and then we'll have a better idea of the fight to come. Until then, have a closer look at the new Altima in the photo gallery above.

Competitive Edge

Brands Hatch played host to the sixth round of the iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series. For the first time in the series’ young history, the virtual site of the online racing was outside the United States, which may have given a competitive edge to some of the European drivers.  Indeed, many series regulars on the circuit decided to take the first round of racing overseas off, and elected to use this week as a drop week in points. However, 55 other sim-racers eagerly sought the opportunity to pick-up points at Brands Hatch and improve their positions in the overall standings. For the past three months, Club Florida’s Christian Aranha has firmly planted his name at the top of the overall standings, making it pretty clear he has no [...]

Winterbottom wins as rivals collide

Mark Winterbottom escaped to victory in a spectacular first V8 Supercars race at Phillip Island, as his title rivals Jamie Whincup and Will Davison collided amid a wild dice for second place. Shane van Gisbergen fought through from 11th on the grid to take second in the Stone Brothers Ford, while his team-mate Tim Slade fended off Garth Tander (Holden Racing Team) for third. Ford filled the podium, but for much of the race it looked like it would be the Ford Performance Racing team itself that took the top three sweep

Mercedes duo sure car will suit Monaco

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are confident that their Mercedes car will be well suited to the Monaco track as they aim for the team's second win of the year. Although the outfit has only had one podium finish so far this year, both drivers believe that the low speed nature of the Monte Carlo track, allied to the demands on traction, should be good for their chances at Formula 1's blue riband event. Rosberg said: "I have always been quick around the streets here, and I believe a good result is possible for us next weekend.

Report: Bentley plotting Dakar effort with used VW Touareg racers?

Bentley EXP 9 F

Bentley is an automaker not without its own racing pedigree, but the bulk of that is anchored in the 1920s and at Le Mans, to which it returned in winning form in the earlier part of the new millennium with the Speed 8. The latest development could, however, see the Flying B marque enter into another class of motorsport competition altogether.

That opposite end of the endurance racing spectrum is the torturous Dakar rally. We first published rumors of Crewe's consideration of the possibility back in November, but according to CAR Magazine, those rumors are apparently kicking into high gear.

That much is owed largely to the emergence of the above-pictured EXP 9 F program, Bentley's concept SUV currently under development. Well, sorta. Bentley's parent company Volkswagen recently withdrew from the Dakar rally after winning it three times in a row - ostensibly to focus on its new World Rally Championship effort, but spurring rumors all the same of it transferring the team to another brand.

Given that the EXP 9 F is based (or would be, anyway) on an architecture related to the Touareg - the race model of which is what the VW team used to dominate the event - the facilitation of Bentley's take-over of the program could prove even more straight-forward than the manner in which Audi successfully supported Bentley's Le Mans team.

To wit, the boys from Crewe are said to be in the process of buying back all the Race Touareg rigs - complete with their 2.5-liter twin-turbo diesels producing 300 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque - that Volkswagen sold to privateer teams upon its departure, suggesting rather poor planning and perhaps only a passing resemblance to the eventual production EXP 9 F (which, incidentally, isn't expected to look like the concept above).

Report: Martin Scorcese to produce Silver Ghost film about Rolls-Royce

Martin Scorcese

This could be interesting: Oscar-winners Martin Scorsese and Richard Attenborogh are teaming up to make a film called Silver Ghost, based, in part, on the lives of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. The screenplay was written by Jeffrey Caine (Goldeneye) and playwright Sharman Macdonald, who also happens to be actress Kiera Knightley's mom.

According to Top Gear, the biopic will be set at the dawn of the 20th Century, during the seminal days of the auto industry. But the report says the real hero of the story will be one Lord John Douglas-Scott Montagu, the Second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu and a member of British Parliament who used his position in British society to champion motoring.

While we're not quite sure what all that Barons and Lords stuff is about, reading that in 1899 Montagu drove the first car to enter the yard of the House of Commons made us think he must have been a decent enough chap. According to the report, he even launched a monthly car magazine. And like any good period-film protagonist, he was romantically linked to another key figure in the story, Eleanor Thornton, the woman who inspired the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot that became a defining feature of the marque.

The film is still a long way from the screen, although Scorcese's involvement can't hurt its chances of getting made. Neither would casting Knightley as Thornton, if you ask us.

Ferrari still needs ‘massive’ step

Ferrari still needs to make a 'massive' step forward with its car if it is to win the world championship this year, despite Fernando Alonso's second place in Spain moving him back to the head of the standings. That is the view of its team principal Stefano Domenicali who thinks that, although updates introduced at Barcelona have delivered as expected, much more progress is needed over the remainder of the campaign. "This has to be a push for all the engineers at home to make sure that we improve the car," Domenicali said about Alonso now being joint leader of the title chase with Sebastian Vettel.
