Official: More photos and info on the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG [w/video]

If you like lighter, faster, and more powerful then you have at least two things to like about the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG. It gets a 537-horsepower, 590-pound-foot version of the M571 twin-turbo V8 making the rounds in AMG vehicles, but that can be bumped to 564 hp and 664 lb-ft with the AMG Performance Package.

All of that thrust works on a car that is 125 kilograms lighter than the last generation, having lost 120 kg through the use of an aluminum bodyshell and another five kg with trunk formed of carbon fiber and plastic. The result is a zero to 100 kph run of 4.2 seconds with the extra juice, and onto 200 kph in 12.6 seconds.

Handling is sharpened with an evolution of the Active Body Control, three-state ESP a la the SLS AMG, as well as an optional AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

Head past the jump for all the details on the matter and a video, and we've added a bunch more photos to our high-res gallery. We'll have even more to say about it when we see it at the Geneva Motor Show.

Night racing in Florida

Members of the Red Sox Racing League traveled to warm, sunny Florida for the “Hendricks Field 30 at Night Sebring” on week seven of their 2012 Season One schedule.  The event was the first night race of the year for RSR drivers.  The fact that it was held on one of most challenging courses on the schedule meant drivers had to spend hours learning the 3.7 mile, 17 corner layout before race time. Sebring has been hosting races since 1950, including the famous “12 Hours of Sebring” endurance race.  The track includes sections of an active airport, so drivers are forced to race on a variety of surfaces as they transition between the hard concrete runways and softer asphalt side roads.  Turn Seventeen, named “Sunset Bend”, has a reputation for [...]

Official: Nissan to field Nismo GT-R in Super GT300 class [w/video]

Nismo GT-R GT3

Think of Japan's Super GT series and you're likely to conjure up images of competition versions of top-spec Japanese supercars like the Lexus LFA, Honda HSV and the Nissan GT-R lapping the likes of Fuji, Suzuka and Motegi, their thunderous 500-horsepower V8 engines drowning out the thunderous applause from the enthralled crowds. But that's just the GT500 class.

Below it there's also the GT300 class, where new challengers this season will include the Subaru BRZ, Honda CR-Z and even the Toyota Prius, all decked out for competition duty with no more than 300 horsepower on tap. So while Nissan has dominated the GT500 class with its purpose-built GT-R racing machine, this year it's fielding a much more production-based version in the GT300 class as well.

While the GT500-spec GT-R ditches its twin-turbo V6 in favor of a V8 - making it more akin to the production car in appearance than in substance - the GT300 challenger is closely based on the road car. It starts out with the Nismo GT3 version (pictured above), and from there applies modifications like an air restrictor to bring it under the 300-horsepower cap to comply with series regulations.

The car is being fielded by the Nissan Driver Development Program, and forms part of the global motorsport program which the Japanese automaker just announced, with participation in both classes of Super GT, Le Mans and associated series, various GT and off-road series here in North America and even the Australian V8 Supercars series. Follow the jump for all the details and an spectacularly cheesy 80s-style montage clip.

Schumacher sure W03 a step forward

Michael Schumacher is sure this year's Mercedes is a step forward compared to last year's challenger after completing his second day of testing at Barcelona. The German had another highly productive day on Thursday, covering 127 laps for a total of 592 km, taking the team's total mileage for the W03 to 1756 km since it made its track debut. Schumacher was second quickest today and he is confident Mercedes has taken a step forward compared to last year.

Ferrari, RBR change test plans again

Ferrari and Red Bull Racing have been forced to abandon plans to run a revised testing programme at Barcelona this week following the intervention of the FIA. However, Ferrari revealed on Tuesday morning that an FIA clarification of article 22.4 of Formula 1's sporting regulations, which governs testing, on Monday night had meant it was no longer possible to stick to its change of plans

Video: Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational puts SEMA cars to the test

Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational

We love SEMA. There's simply no better place to see the aftermarket go wild. Unfortunately, most of the cars, trucks, vans and other heathens that occupy the Las Vegas Convention Center each November are built to do little more than look pretty under the lights. We've always wanted to see the best of the best throw down on a track.

Fortunately for us, there's the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational. For four years now, the battery maker has invited the cream of the SEMA crop to show off just what all that aftermarket hardware is good for.

This year, SPEED tagged along to see what all the fuss was about, and brought along a host of HD cameras to capture the whole event. Hosted by Bill Goldberg, the show is a good chance to catch up on some of the more impressive cars that debuted at SEMA 2011 and watch them as they do battle for the top title.

Who won out this year? We won't spoil it for you. You'll just have to look for the Optima Ultimate Street Invitational on SPEED. The show debuted this weekend, but will re-air on March 11 at 2:30 PM EST. In the meantime, check out the teaser after the jump.

Andreas Mikkelsen extended his lead over Juho Hanninen through the first four stages of day two of Rally Azores. There was little to choose between the two Skoda drivers until Hanninen had a quick spin near the end of SS5, losing 10 seconds. Mahar Holds-off Macklin at Darlington

For Week Three the NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series (NiCBS) traveled to the famous track known as “The Lady in Black.” The famed South Carolina track has a rich history and sim racers looked to add their own history as they pursue an iRacing championship. 241 racers would attempt at least one race during the week while 63 drivers turned at least one qualifying lap at Darlington . . . the track too tough to tame. Week Three’s Strength of Field race took place on Thursday at 9:30pm EST as have all the SoF races this season. The 3997 SoF race paid the winner 252 points to win and was broadcasted live on ETV (http://www.etv-eplay.net/wordpress/?review=iracing-thursday-nite-thunder-3#2). Brad Mahar (New England) would find himself in victory lane when was all said and [...]

Video: Translogic drives a poo-powered car

Bio Bug

Translogic has driven a lot of interesting vehicles over the past two years. Our sister site filmed some of the first seat time in a Chevrolet Volt, drove Local Motors' Rally Fighter, got behind the wheel of an electric DeLorean, turned in the first test drive of the Lightning GT supercar, tried out the YikeBike, and even found a wacky wood-powered car called the "Beaver." You'd think there wouldn't be anything more outrageous for those guys to find seat time in. Yet they've managed to find yet another crazy transportation project with an alternative power source to top them all: human waste.

While we've written about Geneco's Bio Bug before, this episode of Translogic features an actual road test, filmed onsite at the Wessex Water waste treatment plant in England. The plant produces biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide gas that's used to power this Volkswagen New Beetle. The conversion sounds pretty straightforward, and is similar to adapting a gasoline engine to run on propane.

Horner: Teams trust FIA over Bahrain

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says Formula 1 teams will trust the FIA when deciding on the Bahrain GP, but insists there are no plans to cancel the event at the moment. The current political situation in the country has led to calls for the event to be canned, although F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said earlier this week there were no concerns about the grand prix. Horner said the teams will rely on the FIA to make the right decision.

Official: Lyonheart K aims to rekindle British sporting tradition with E-Type homage

Lyonheart K

Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, few automobile shapes are as imitated as the legendary Jaguar E-Type. Of course, Jaguar itself has drawn inspiration from its most iconic sportscar with the contemporary XK and the more recent C-X16 concept. Eagle has reinterpreted the classic with modern accoutrements. And about a year ago a Swedish designer by the name of Bo Zolland rendered a sumptuously retro re-imagination of the form with the Growler E.

That design was slated to go into limited production by a firm called Visualtech, but now the design has resurfaced under a new moniker: Lyonheart. Based on a tweaked version of Zolland's renderings, designer Robert Palm has given the retro E a slightly more aggressive look, with more catlike headlamps and retro touches that are somehow even more pronounced.

The new Anglo-Swiss outfit intends to render the shape in carbon fiber, stainless steel, brushed aluminum, chrome, leather and wood veneer and put it into limited production in England for 495,000 euros a pop - equivalent to about $650K. Power is slated to come from a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 550 metric horsepower (542 by our standards) and 500 pound-feet of torque, which - coupled with a curb weight targeted under 3,500 lbs - aims to propel the Lyonheart K from 0-62 mph in under four seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 300 kph (186 mph).

Follow the jump for the press release and scope out the fresh renderings in the high-res image gallery above for a closer look.

Spy Shots: BMW 3 Series Touring shakes its roomy rump

BMW F31 3 Series Touring rear three-quarter spy shot

Slowly but surely, we're becoming quite smitten with the F30 BMW 3 Series. The four-cylinder 328i and six-pot 335i sedans have officially launched here in the United States, and now, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the 3er body styles get the F30 treatment. First up is the wagon Touring (F31, internally), which our spies recently caught testing out in the snow.

Let's start with some good news: We have no reason to believe that BMW won't offer its capacious 3 Series here in the United States. The Touring has been a part of the 3's lineup in the U.S. for decades, and BMW executives have already confirmed that the wagon will be offered here in the States.

Like the outgoing 3 Series, expect just a 328i model in rear- and (forthcoming) xDrive all-wheel-drive formats. Of course, other markets will get some tasty diesel options, but since the wagon doesn't account for a huge percentage of 3 Series sales in the U.S., having one engine option will likely have to suffice.

Look for the 3 Series Touring to launch in the near future (Geneva Motor Show?) with the first cars hitting the ground in Europe this fall.

It all came down to about four inches or 0.003 of a second.  That was the difference between first and second place after 50+ miles of racing action during the Red Sox Racing League’s 5th race of the 2012 Season One schedule.  Twenty-two drivers participated in the “Kōraku-en 30 at Okayama” in Mimasaka, Okayama Japan, but two of them gave fans the best road course finish in RSR history.   The tightly designed, 2.314 mile, eleven corner course at Okayama promised fans a delightful event, but race organizers couldn’t have predicted the incredible finish RSR drivers produced during the event.  The final outcome of the Class A event wasn’t decided until high speed photography confirmed the results posted on the electronic scoreboard.  Chad Peterson earned the win after recovering from [...]

Baltimore race set to continue

The future of IndyCar's Baltimore street race appears to have been secured, with city officials having appointed a new promoter for the event. Last year's inaugural race was an enormous hit with drivers and fans, but the viability of the event was cast into doubt when it was revealed that the organiser had been struck by severe financial troubles. City officials cancelled the original contract in December, but Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced yesterday that a new company called Downforce Racing - comprised of two Baltimore entrepreneurs and Indianapolis-based construction executive Dale Dillon – will now run the event

Stewart not taking form for granted

Tony Stewart feels it is too early to know if he can carry his championship winning form in last year's NASCAR Sprint Cup into 2012. The three-time champion finished the 2011 Cup season in dominant form, winning five of the final 10 races to beat Carl Edwards to the crown. Stewart and Edwards were the class of the field in the final couple of races, but speaking ahead of this weekend's Budweiser Shootout non-championship event, the reigning champion believes that it will take time to judge the competitive order for this year
